Introducing the latest major update to Gravity Sketch, available to all cloud, Steam and Oculus store customers from July 16th, 2020.

For the past 6 months the team has dived deep into workflows of some power users from the community. We focused on areas of the user experience where the application “got in the way” and broke up their creative flow state. This process helped identify a handful of features which will not only improve the experience but accelerate workflows.

We also identified there are a number of challenges with managing files and working with 3D creations outside of the VR environment. This insight has driven us to launch a product specifically for areas of the workflow outside of the act of creation itself, LandingPad, which is a cloud platform designed to support better file management, sharing, and collaboration.

There has been lots of activity at Gravity Sketch in recent months, with the result being the release of a major update to the design platform this week. This is available for all cloud users from 15th July, 2020. The update includes:

  • An updated VR app across all platforms, bringing additional geometry tools, and infinite layers
  • The launch of Gravity Sketch’s second product, Landing Pad. This cloud platform provides workflow tools and file management through a web browser, including a 3D web viewer that allows users to quickly view their sketches on any screen

The latest version of the software is the result of 6 months of development, and includes a wide range of improvements and enhancements that are available across all platforms (PC VR and Oculus Quest):

  • Infinite layers – there has been a huge request for more layers and a system which allows users to manage layers in a more flexible way. We have heard this loud and clear and now all users have the ability to add as many layers they want.

  • Weighted Control Points – control the weight of each control point on strokes, surfaces, and revolves. Increasing the weight pulls the stroke or surface towards the control point, decreasing it pushes it away. To change the curvature of the geometry between the two adjacent points, move the thumbstick up or down on your main hand when you have grabbed a control point.

  • SubD Edge Creasing – Create sharp edges on your Subdivision surfaces with the new SubD creasing tool by opening the SubD tool shelf, grabbing the crease tool, and clicking on edges to apply a hard crease.

  • Pull surfaces from splines – Extrude a surface from an existing stroke, speeding up the journey from line sketch to fully surfaced model. To access this feature, click on the “surface from spline” button from inside the surface tool menu, bring your hands near to the stroke or surface you want to extrude from and then use the trigger buttons to extrude.

The above list is a selection of the most impactful updates, however there are many more included, including additional precision tools (including measurement), a mesh simplification tool, and the ability to snap SubD objects.

We work closely with our beta testers to better identify key features and areas of the focus which improve the overall workflow and user experience.
